Say what they will, but it is a widely-known fact that an ample amount of red wine is the surest road to your health and well-being. It is also considered a very effective preventive measure against cardiovascular and coronal diseases. Research has proven that red wine comprises of over 200 types of nutritional elements which are good for our health. Some of these elements are sugar, organic acids, amino acids, vitamins and polyphenols, which has antioxidant properties as well. These are vital for our body for normal body growth, development and metabolism. Remember to take particular notice of this substance found in grapes (and other berries such as mulberries and blueberries) called resveratrol. It is anti-oxidation and anti-aging, something all of us would appreciate!

On the other hand, smoking is an extremely unhealthy addiction and habit which in the long run can lead to the damage of your vascular endothelium (inner lining of blood vessels), systemic inflammation and cause the aging of our cells. According to a research document published by the American Journal of Medicine, it is shown that drinking two glasses of red wine before a smoking session significantly reduces damages done to your vascular endothelium.

An experiment was conducted on 20 healthy and non-smoking volunteers, with the agenda of observing if there were any changes in their blood and its biochemical processes when they start smoking. All 20 of these participants were asked to smoke 3 cigarettes, with half of them downing a glass of red wine before the smoking commenced. Usually when someone inhales cigarette smoke into their systems, the harmful substances in the tobacco will gradually begin to damage one’s vascular endothelium; but to the experimenters’ surprise, there was very minimal damage done to their vascular endothelium! However, the experiment was rather biased as it was conducted on non-smokers that were healthy and young; and therefore results of the experiment on long-term and middle-aged smokers are currently still unknown. In any case, we would still like to dissuade everyone from smoking and advise you to stick to a healthy lifestyle instead. Say no to cigarettes and abstain from all its vices. Remember – your body is a temple, but only if you treat it as one.
