International Women’s Day is just round the corner, and we would like to take a step back to think about the numerous women that inspire us on this planet. Here are 5 of them that really stirred our emotions.
MOTHER TERESA
Mother Teresa was a selfless woman that dedicated her whole life to charity and humanitarian work, such as founding the Missionaries of Charity, an organization dedicated to helping poverty-stricken individuals and families. Her efforts were only recognised in 1979 after she won the Nobel Peace Prize! The thing is, she did not do all the things that she did for recognition or fame – she did them simply because she wanted to offer a helping hand to the world. She believed in doing whatever was possible to help, through her philosophy being, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.”
AMELIA EARHART

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to ever fly solo across the Pacific Ocean, and that was in 1928! She was a true adventurer, being incredibly brave and inspiring to all the men and women out there. For her efforts, she was rewarded with the Distinguished Flying Cross, and she was once again the first woman to receive that award. She soared through clouds and across oceans, constantly broke records, and simply had the time of her life. Her famous quote is, “The woman who can create her own job is the woman who will win fame and fortune.”
PRINCESS DIANA

The whole world looks up to Princess Diana – be it during her lifetime or after! She is definitely not one to forget. After marrying into the Royal Family, most people assumed that she would just enjoy a life of relaxation and luxury without a care in the world. However, she made use of her prominent status to give back to society by becoming the figurehead for numerous charity campaigns around the world! Her selfless attitude is summed up by one of her most famous quotes, “Anywhere I see suffering, that is where I want to be, doing what I can.” Truly an awe-inspiring lady that we can learn a couple of lessons from.
MALALA YOUSAFZAI

Malala Yousafzai is the youngest woman in the world to have ever received a Nobel Prize laureate. What she has gone through in her young and tender life is unimaginable – she overcame an assassination attempt by the Taliban in occupied Pakistan at the young age of fifteen, to campaign for women and children’s rights to an education. Despite the dangers coming at her, she stayed firm and stood up for what she strongly believed in. Her famous quote goes like this, “I tell my story not because it is unique, but because it is the story of many girls.” In a safe nation like Singapore, we should all be more appreciative and grateful for what we have here.
ANNA MAY WONG

Despite dealing with racism that plagued her career, Anna is still considered to be Hollywood’s first Asian American movie star during the 1920s to 1960s. Her talent earned her roles in over 50 domestic and global movies. A year before her death in 1961, she was awarded with a star on the Hollywood walk of fame! One of her famous quotes is, “The harder the work, the greater the satisfaction in accomplishing it.”
