One of our favourite things to do when we were young was to run around in crowded places and then cry when we get lost or better yet fall flat on our faces and would stand up crying. Many did not learn their lesson and would still continue to run only to look up at our mum to see her stare at us and say “Ah Run somemore, Run! Wait, you fall then you will know.
2. THIS HOUSE IS LIKE A HOTEL
Clubbing, outdoor activities followed by a long night of sleeping in till Mid Saturday morning is how most of us spent our weekends on a weekend. Spending many hours out only to come home and shower and have meals cooked was the life. Yes, it breaks our mum’s heart to see us living that way but it also reminds us of the love and concern that she shares with us. While mum says “This house is a hotel!”. We stand in guilt and shame as we know what we did not spend enough time with her.
3. SAY THAT AGAIN? I DARE YOU.
It actually means that you should not do it. Mum is giving you time to think about what you are going to say and whether you should say it. For instance, if we casually tend to cuss or swear, Mum’s can say, “Say that again? I dare you” and if you actually say it, you can feel a warm feeling on your face followed by finger marks right across your face. Mum has the ability to be compassionate and wrath at the same time. Let’s never forget, this also breaks her heart but it also gives us a time to think about what we have done.
4. WHO IS GOING TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOU? AM I YOUR MAID?
This superpower comes with a death stare if you answer in both ways. If you say yes, you might get a beating of a lifetime for disrespecting her and if you answer no, a looooooooonnnnggg nagging will come your way. So the chances of you getting past this one is a no go. Independence can be learnt through a different way but learning through household chores are a basic step for us to get through in life. These simple steps of being proactive or taking action in our life comes in handy from doing simple household chores.
5. VACUUMING WHILE YOU ARE SLEEPING
Well, this is not what mum will say but after a long night of hanging out with your friends on a Friday night, the least we could do is to sleep in until 12 noon on a Saturday. BUT…. at 8.30am, a familiar annoying sound. The vacuum cleaner comes on and you are somehow forced to wake up and say MUMMMM!!! It’s too loud or covers your head with the pillow. That being said, it’s also a sign for us to start the day early and that breakfast might have already been made for the day.
6. EH BOY/ GIRL, HOW DO I DO THIS AR?
Whether it is writing an email or a remote control or tuning in to netflix when our mum asks us how to do it. Irritated, we usually let her know. Mum! What do you mean you don’t know? It’s so simple! It’s just 2 simple buttons and bam there we are. Then our mum plays this card, who taught you how to go to the toilet? Who taught you how to use the spoon? Then when you cannot find anything, Mummmmmmmmmm, where is my underwear? and somehow she manages to find the thing she doesn’t know about. Don’t even get me started on Shopee and lazada and when the item will come. They will bug you for a long time until it arrives and even then, they won’t be satisfied. 7. YOU CAN BE 50 AND I WILL STILL SLAP YOUR FACE
Try talking back to your parents at any age and they will still check you. They will not follow your lame jokes, they will not care if you are right or wrong. If you are rude, there is no arguing and one slap will still come across your face. Although, they never like raising hands on you but if you have done something wrong, there is no coming back from that. This shows that the Mother is always right no matter what the circumstances are.
8.WHEN SHE CALLS YOU BY YOUR FULL NAME
When you hear this, you know that you have really messed up. Whether you run or hide, you know you are in BIGGGG TROUBLE! JONATHAN TAN AH KOW! COME HERE NOW! Whether I am 5 or 55, I am thinking oh dear, what have I done wrong this time? That death stare or look of disappointment can pierce your heart sharper than a razer blade. However it could also mean that I didn’t finish my food or drink enough water.
9. WHY EAT SO LITTLE? EVEN THE BIRD EAT MORE!
Talking about having lunch or dinner especially when your mum cooks is truly something that you will always miss. Mum makes the best curry, the best beef stew and even the best Breakfast even McDonalds can’t beat. Try and see if you take just a little bit of everything and when your food portion is so little that even a bird would eat more. Having a diet in the house can seem counter productive especially if you have a loving mum. It could also mean why you not appreciating my cooking.
10. I CALLED YOU 50 TIMES, WHERE ARE YOU?
One of the best ways mum shows her concern is her big heart. I remember the times when she was trying to get me only to realize if I have enough pocket money, enough to eat or simply want to know what time I am coming home. That somewhat gives comfort because the day she stops doing that, then I will feel very worried wondering what is happening or if mum is ok. Then the famous reply will come in “Even if I’m dead, you also won’t know”. Whether you are superman, superwoman or even Batman, Mum still reigns the greatest superhero.
